9. May 2013: Restaurant Don Ulpiano
Before going for dinner, one needs something small to get started into the evening – and once more it is absolutely worth making a stop and having pintxos (1 pintxo, EUR 1.85). The pintxos are fine – tasty, rich, great but do not match to the level of the “Corinto Y Oro” we have been to the day before. At least the beer prices are very fair (EUR 2.10 for a cana) and so is the price of water (EUR 1.20).
What is outstanding here is the Jamon Iberíco which they serve – freshly cut from the pig’s leg, a plate accounts for EUR 15.00. This is comparatively cheap considering what you would pay for it in Switzerland but then again it is also comparatively expensive considering we are in Bilbao.
In any case, while the bar looks very appealing and nice and the layout of the pintxos just basically forces you to enter the place …
… and keeps attracting your looks to the layout …
… the picture changes a bit with the rest of the bar. The chairs and tables which are put there are not as inviting and beautiful as the rest of the bar which is kind of a down-turn but then again it does not really matter as you do not come here for the interior but rather for the food.
The waiter – which seemed to be the owner at the same time – is very friendly and helpful. Once he realized we were going to order more than just a couple of beers, he was all ours helping and serving where he could. Unfortunately for him, we already had a booking for our dinner. In any case, if you are looking for an alternative to the Corinto Y Oro, I think the Restaurant Don Ulpiano is definitely worth a visit. Especially because of the Jamon Iberíco they freshly cut from the pig’s leg there!
