11. May 2013: Restaurant Batzoki Santurtzi
Recommended by the local tourist office my expectations were limited – and they were about met. The place is quite simply furnished and is mostly frequented by locals. The “tomato salad with garlic” (EUR 7.00) was simple – the tomatoes were fresh, the garlic was so intense that it was overwhelming the tomato taste.
What was quite fine though were the “sardines” (EUR 5.00). They were tasty but quite heavily salted – still, a really honest and simple dish.
What was definitely not okay was the fact that we were served bread and per bread EUR 0.60 were charged – no matter if we ate it or not. Other than that, the prices are absolutely fine. A bottle of water (0,33L) accounts for EUR 2.60, and an espresso for EUR 1.50. The waitress – which seemed to be the owner – was quite unfriendly at first but once she realized I speak Spanish she became way friendlier. Overall, the dishes are absolutely simple but fine, the place is rather used with limitedly friendly service – but at least you won’t be able to spend a lot of money!
