25. October 2013: Restaurant Scala
Quite an Italian place, I must say. Overall, the place reminded me a bit of Italy besides the crapy table we got when we walked in around 10pm. The “tomato soup with fresh basil” (CHF 8.50) was served within minutes and it was actually quite okay. It had the original taste of tomaotes and not this articial packet soup taste. The fresh basil was applied generously and provided a good hint of freshness. It was lacking a bit in spices though but after putting some pepper, it was actually quite good.
The “Tagliatelle della Nonna (home-made noodles, mozzarella, tomato cubes, basil, au gratin)” (CHF 20.20) were not quite what I expected as I did not see the “au gratin” part but they were actually quite good. Only the tomato cubes were somehow pointless as they did not stick to the noodles so you just had a bunch of tomato cubes on your plate at the end. Besides that, the pasta was actually quite good.
The prices for the dishes are – for Zurich – very, very reasonable and I guess even for the beverages (1L water, CHF 9.90) and the food is quite fine too. The waitress was very friendly, joking and only in the beginning slightly confused (as she brought me a fork for my soup). But other than that, good and sound service. The atomsphere is pretty Italian – it is cramped, it is loud, actually quite nice. Just make sure that you do not get the table close to the entrance as there it is not really providing this comfortable feeling.
