17. January 2014: Restaurant Stef’s Freieck

| January 23, 2014 | 0 Comments

I have never heard about the Restaurant Stef’s Freieck before and randomly came across it, while browsing through TripAdvisor (where it is currently ranked #4). I must say, it was a blast. Already the starter – the “Tatar of the Zurich baby beef” (CHF 24.00) – was quite pleasurable: the beef was aromatic, the salad was good and the quail eggs added nicely to the dish.

Yet, the starter could not compare to the glory of which was the main dish: a “beef filet (150gr), medium-rare, with a nice pepper crust, vegetables, rosemary potatoes and veal jus” (CHF 49.00). The beef filet was incredibly tender, the aromas were mouth-watering and last but not least the pepper crust absolutely convincing. I barely ever had a beef filet of that quality in Switzerland.

My final course was “Meinrad’s raw milk cheese plate (Swiss and French cheese, Urner Birnenweggen)” (CHF 17.00). Though rather small in size, it consisted of an acceptable selection of cheese. It was not necessarily the perfect finish to the starter and main dish but as already mentioned: acceptable.

The place is absolutely lovely – the restaurant is based on the setup of a living room, converted into a restaurant. Despite its small size and the slight over-crowdedness, it is very charming and absolutely appealing. The service can be described as passionate, dedicated and definitely competent. However, the mere fact that a single waiter had to attend to about 25 guests does put your patience to a test. Nonetheless, our waiter made up for this organizational deficiency with devotion and friendliness.

The prices are more than fair: a “Bric del Gaian, 2003” accounts for CHF 16.00, a bottle of “Sito Moresco, Angelo Gaja, 2011” for CHF 90.00, a 0,5L bottle of mineral water for CHF 5.50 and a double espresso for CHF 6.00 – not to mention the dishes which – to be blunt – are mind-blowingly good.

Overall, I perfectly understand why the restaurant is rated number 6 of all restaurants located in Zurich – impeccable food, fair prices, great atmosphere and good service. I can absolutely recommend the Restaurant Stef’s Freieck.
