25. March 2014: Restaurant Metzg

| April 3, 2014 | 0 Comments

Since I’m in Zurich on a frequent basis I have been recommended the Restaurant Metzg – and while I probably would have never entered it when looking at it from the outside, I must say I was absolutely positively surprised. The place is tiny, cramped, filled with people but very atmospheric. The interior is simple but warm and welcoming. I started with the recommended “Pulpo-Carpaccio with pine nuts and pimenton” (CHF 22.00) which was mostly delicious. Only a few slices towards the end somehow contained a flavour which was not up to the task of satisfying my taste buds.

The “beef filet (200gr) with red and green peppercorns, onions, chive and butter” (CHF 55.00) was perfect. The meat was aromatic and tender and the topping of peppercorns and onions was unusual but truly scrumptious.

The “home-made spaetzle” which were served as a side were good, no question but did not reach the level of the pulpo or the beef filet.

At least the final course, the “Crema Catalana” (CHF 10.00) had a nice vanilla flavour, was perfectly blazed and aromatic. Definitely a perfect ending to a great meal.

While the prices are absolutely fair for what you get you have to be aware of the fact that you will spend some money – and the same applies to the beverages, fair but not cheap: “Conde del Valdemar, Reserva, 2006” (CHF 69.00), “Water, 1L” (CHF 9.00), and “double espresso” (CHF 6.50). A few words about the service: friendly, helpful but a bit unattentive and sometimes slow (and forgetful) which is a pity as else I the dishes and the atmosphere speak for itself – great food, great place!
