20. June 2014: Restaurant Medici

A few seconds after taking my seat the bread and spread was already served. The bread was slightly dry but the spread on the other hand was quite refreshing – I am not enitrely sure of what the spread tasted but it was somehow having a green-ish taste.

I decided to go for the menu (EUR 47.50) which started with “forest mushroom panna cota with salmon tartare and spinach espuma” as a greeting from the kitchen. While the single elements were not outstanding the combination of tastes and consistencies provided quite a nice start into the evening.

The first course of the menu was “a mildly smoked king prawn on cous cous salad with pulpo carpaccio and lemon cream”. The king prawn was covered in a serving bell filled with smoke – when the dish was served the bell was removed and a nice cloud of smoke emerged. While it is definitely a nice effect and the slight aftertaste of smoke of the king prawn is also pleasant it was a bit too much smoke for my personal gusto. The pulpo carpaccio was aromatic and rich but I have had smoother before.

The next dish really surprised me – in a positive way. I thought it was more of a tuna dish than of a tomato dish but the chef provided me with a new view on it. The “marinated yellow fin tuna on two kinds of tomatoes with wild herbs” already looked quite interesting due to the variety of colours which were at display in the dish. The tomato jelly was having only slihgtly the consistency of jelly but was really smooth. The tuna which was somehow inlayed into the jelly was aromatic.

What came with the jelly was “gazpacho sorbet” and I must admit it was the surprise of the evening. It really had the taste of gazpacho, so it was of strong and somehow salty flavour but it had the consistency of a classical sorbet. Very interesting and surprising but very tasty at the same time.

The main course was “lamb back in a ginger cranberry crust on a chanterelles leek ragout with truffeled cream polenta”. The lamb did not taste like lamb really and was cooked perfectly rose. The ginger cranberry crust a perfect combination of spicy and sweet and the truffeled cream polenta was smooth and did not have this overwhelming taste of truffles (like it often has) which was rather perfect.

The “milk cheese selection with grapes and chutneys of Maître Affineur Waltmann” was a great selection of cheeses – it ranged from smooth milk cheese to rather intense and strong cheese. The chutneys were applied a bit relunctantly but tasted great. What was the only disappointment was the fact that unfortunately I was not explained which cheeses I just had been served.

The waitresses are very friendly and do a great job – they are there all the time, the dishes are timed perfectly and you are being asked if you want to make a little (or maybe a bit a longer) break between the single dishes. The service is absolutely flawless – besides the cheese “incident”. When I asked about a glass of red wine to be recommended she told me that there is this wine called “Mouthbomb” which tastes like sour cherries. I mean, I hear these descriptions of wines quite often and they are often bullcrap – but in this particular case I must admit that the wine was not only rich but had a perfect bouquet like sour cherries – loved it!

The place is nice in atmosphere but a bit too cold (too much air conditioning) and I personally consider the layout of the restaurant not optimal. However, the decoration is nice and appealing in general and you get to enjoy an evening out. Overall, I must say that the Restaurant Medici provides great dishes and this for an incredibly fair price. The service is close to flawless and the atmosphere is okay. So, to sum it up, I can absolutely recommend you to dine at the restaurant Medici!
