6. July 2014: Restaurant The Delaunay
The “Steak Tartare” (GBP 10.95) is not really a British dish but I must admit that it was actually very tasty – the beef is of good quality, smooth in consistency and aromatic. The fresh egg yolk refined the steak tartare perfectly – smoothened it out even a bit more.
The “French Fries” (GBP 4.50) as a side dish complemented the steak tartare quite good – and they were of a nice crispiness without being to crispy and luckily they had not a single sign towards being stroppy.
In order to balance off the quite heavy breakfast, I went for an “Avocado, Radish & Butter-Leaf Salad” (GBP 7.75) and I must say although I never thought that Britains are big on salad I must admit that it was a pleasant salad with quite tasty and refreshing salad sauce. The avocado was quite generously applied to the salad and the sprouts rounded off the dish.
As it was my last meal in London for this time, I went for the “White & Dark Bavarian Chocolate with passion fruit coulis” (GBP 7.25) to complete my breakfast. The mousse was tasty but quite heavy. The passion fruit coulis on the other hand provided it with a refreshing touch balancing off the heaviness of the chocolate.
While the drinks they offer at The Delaunay are rather limited when it comes to the selection at display, I must admit that the “Warsaw Martini (Vodka, Blackberry)” (GBP 8.75) was a tasty and refreshing drink for breakfast.
Usually, I am not a big fan of cover charges but in this particular case I must admit I consider it absolutely appropriate (GBP 2.00) for the bread and salted butter. The bread is served warm which makes it absolutely lovely to dig in.
The waiters at The Delaunay are absolute professionals providing high quality service and being friendly and correct at all times and even the waiting time for the dishes after having placed the order is absolutely fine. There was only one moment of “imperfection” – when I asked for the cocktail’s menu the waiter looked at me like I am coming from another planet (as apparently one does not have cocktails on a Sunday at 1pm).
The atmosphere at The Delaunay is lovely – it is a sister restaurant of The Wolseley which I had the pleasure to have breakfast at a couple of year’s ago. In comparison to The Wolseley The Delaunay is less posh and more down-to-earth. Last but not least, the prices are absolutely fair for what you get.
I can absolutely recommend you to have breakfast at The Delaunay on a Sunday as the atmosphere is great, the food is good, the waiters are highly professional and the prices are absolutely fair too. It is absolutely necessary to book a table in advance though as else you won’t stand a chance to sit down.
