18. October 2009: Restaurant Enoteca e Taverna Capranica

| October 19, 2009 | 1 Comments

The Enoteca e Taverna Capranica is located close to the Pantheon and reachable within a five-minutes footwalk from there or about a ten-minutes footwalk from the metro station Barberini. If you’re not running out of time you can get around Fontane di Trevi and slowly walk to the place.

Once you enter the Enoteca e Taverna Capranica, you immediately feel like in a cosy Italian wine cellar. The walls are full with wine bottles and it’s not the case that they are actually just there to look good but they’re taken off the wall if a customer orders them.

Winewall

The menu is quite impressive with regards to the selection possibilities and even more persuading when it comes to the wine section as there is a huge selection of different wines – every taste and purse will find something it likes! We’ve gotten the right wine right from the beginning on but some others at the table got the wrong one – a sparkling instead of a dry one which is from my point of view not acceptable.

Weinflasche

As a started I enjoyed beef carpaccio with black truffles and parmesan cheese – it looked extremly appealing and it was very delicious.

Carpaccio

The main course was a beef fillet with speck and roasted patatoes which was grilled to the exact point I wanted it – medium rare. The only problem with this is, that it was pure coincidence as the waiter didn’t even ask how I wanted te beef which is supposed to happen in every restaurant – no matter of which level we’re talking! It turned out to be good but still – it’s a no go to not ask the customer! Nevertheless, I must say that it was very tasteful and rich. Only the decoration of the plate could be a bit improved.

After the main course we ended the meal with desert, espresso and grappa. The desert – I didn’t taste it – looked very appealing and should be the benchmark for the other courses served – with regards to the looks/decoration.

Tiramisu

When I ordered a grappa, I was informed that they don’t have a list of grappas available so I asked for a barrique grappa of the moscato grape – and I got a clear one not really being a moscato. Of course, I refused to take it and ordered the one I wanted in the first place and I got it. But that I actually order something and get the wrong thing in the first place, should really not happen. The problem seemed to be that we didn’t have one waiter who was responsible for our table but three or four so mix-ups are kind of expectable.

Nevertheless, the ambiente of the place is overwhelming, the background music is not loud so you can easily talk together and the food and wine selection is very good. Little mix-ups with the ordered beverages result from diverging quality of the waiters – a thing that should definitely be improved! In any case, a reservation call is recommended to be!

2011. Food and wine were okay. But the same waiter must have still been there. The waiter could not would not speak english and seemed inconvenaced by us being there. Our party of four were the only the only ones in the place. There was a young lady working there who did speak English but the “waiter” would not allow her to help us with the order.
