16. July 2014: Restaurant Il Salotto
After finally having been able to order with our Tamil waiter, the amuse bouche was “tomato mozzarella basil” which was a good start into the evening.
The starter “thinly cut fennel, orange, fresh pecorino, roasted pine nuts served with Sicilian olive oil, lemon and avocado vinaigrette” (CHF 14.50) was a good combination of flavours as it had the basic taste of fennel and the freshness of the oranges – but the “thinly cut fennel” was not really thinly cut and almost unpleasantly thick.
The first course was “black sepia gnocchi with calamari, tomatoes and zucchine” (CHF 27.50). The sauce was somehow not tasting like much and the calamari were a bit too chewy – but what kind of really was the highlight was a piece of plastic which was in my gnocchi. I obviously showed it to the waiter who then came back and told me it was a piece of bone of the calamari. According to my knowledge, calamari don’t have bones …
The main course was “guinea fowl with mixed mushrooms with a white wine sauce” (CHF 36.50) which was okay. The guinea fowl was not entirely dry, the mixed mushrooms were lacking taste – very average dish.
The prices are quite okay which also applies for the beverages (0,5L water, CHF 5.50; double espresso, CHF 5.50). But as previously stated the food is only of limited quality – and so is the service. We had to wait for approximately 15 minutes before the waiter even realized that we wanted to pay – and we were the only customers left. With regards to the atmosphere, the place is actually quite nice – but the lack of service quality and the limitedly tasty food kind of makes it not that much worth to go there.
