21. July 2014: Restaurant Runway 34
The Runway 34 is pretty unique when it comes to its design – it is a former airplane hangar where you can still find a life-size airplane. The whole concept is based of being served in an airplane, so the waitress acts like a stewardess bringing the food in an airplane trolley and basically calling each course a start and a landing. My “start” was “Suvarnabhumi Special (chicken broth with coconut milk, shitake mushrooms, spring onions and tender chunks of chicken)” (CHF 14.80) which was quite okay and had a nice degree of spiciness.
As a main course I chose the “Flying doctor (kangaroo steak served with grilled vegetavle and a baked potato with sour cream, as well cafe de paris, teriyaki mayonnaise and a Carolina honey BBQ sauce)” (CHF 34.80). Frankly speaking, I was disappointed. The meat itself was okay but the size of the meat was definitely not to my liking. Additionally, I had asked if I can get it without the potato as I never eat it anyway – but was still served the potato. The sauces are okay but not really outstanding either. So, as my take-off was rather smooth, the main flight was quite shakey.
Besides that, the place is nice, the waiters do a good job and the prices are fine – although CHF 9.50 for 0,75L of water is a bit a stretch. At least the double espresso (CHF 5.90) is fair in price. Overall, the Runway 34 is a nice place – but you should come here more because of the concept and the way the waiters act according to it than the food.
