15. August 2014: Restaurant Quaglinos

| September 23, 2014 | 0 Comments

Sometimes there are weeks where you end up eating the same over and over again – and somehow this week it was “foie gras” as well as “entrecôte café de paris”. In any case, I decided to have “foie gras de canard, compote de pommes et brioche” (CHF 19.00) with an additional slice of “foie gras de canard róti” (+ CHF 10.00). The foie gras de canard was aromatic but had a rather thick layer on the outside which was not entirely to my liking. Also, the foie gras de canard róti did not entirely match my expectations (although it is probably not fair as I had just dined at Schloss Schauenstein six days before).

As a main course, I ate yet another “Entrecôte Café de Paris” …

… “with Pommes Allumettes” (CHF 48.00). The meat was actually quite tasty and aromatic but the sauce did not match to what I have had two days ago. However, the dish being CHF 16.00 cheaper it was still fine. Again, the Pommes Alumettes did not match my expectations from the Restaurant La Côte but were quite fine too.

For dessert I had the “sour cream sorbet as well as the chocolate sorbet” (CHF 5.00 per scoop). You probably think “dude, there is no such thing as a chocolate sorbet” but I tell you there is. Although I am not entirely sure if I would have called it sorbet when I tried it. However, the chocolate sorbet does actually have the consistency of sorbet and matches quite well with the sour cream sorbet.

While the prices are definitely fair for the dishes this also applies to the beverages. A beer accounts for CHF 4.90, a bottle of Rioja Crianza for CHF 69.00, a double espresso for CHF 6.90 and a glass of “Berta Grappa, Tre Soli Tre” for CHF 17.00.

The service was overall friendly and competent – however, there is room for improvement. With regards to the bread and butter which was brought to our table – the bread was fresh and the butter was nicely salted.

The place is rather atmospheric I must admit really like a traditional French restaurant where you sit down in large cushions and enjoy the heaviness of the atmosphere. Overall, the Restaurant Quaglinos is a fine place but there is definitely room for improvement with regards to the service and also a bit with regards to the dishes.
