17. August 2014: Restaurant Sonnenberg

| September 27, 2014 | 0 Comments

I am not often at the Restaurant Sonnenberg but each time there is a Chaîne event, I consider it worth going to. This time it was the summer event where the grill was on full heat. As a starter several amuse bouches were offered ranging from “spare ribs” to “pulled beef burgers”, “salmon tatar”, “cucumber sandwiches” and finally “alborelle”.

While enjoying the time in the sun it was time to raid the “BBQ Buffet” with a lot of different “salads and antipasti” (salad, tuna salad, caesar salad, white beans, calamaretti, filled tomatoes, goat cheese, burrata, vitello tonnato, melons, green beans, bread). To be enitrely honest, the last time I ate at the Restaurant Sonnenberg it was more refined but this time it was approximately 140 guests instead of only approx. 75 (as last time).

However, the highlight of the day was the meat and fish grill. On one hand there were “lamb racks, Grisonian beef filet, veal steak, veal kidneys, veal sweetbread, veal bratwurst, cervelat, chili sausages, beef ribeye, suckling pig” and kobe beef”. While I – unfortunately – did not have the chance to try everything I managed to get a nice piece of kobe beef and I must really admit that it was incredibly tasty beef.

But it was obviously not yet done with the meat only but also seafood was grilled – “gamberoni, Coquills St. Jacques with herbs, baudroie, turbot, and salmon”. Again, also here I did not have the chance to try everything but the Coquills St. Jacques and the gamberoni I had the chance to try were aromatic and very lovely in taste.

As you can see – not only eating was fun – also preparing everything at the grill was obviously fun!

Obviously, there were also side dishes like “potatoes au gratin, baked potatoes with sour cream, stealth fries, ratatouille and leaf spinach”. What was a bit surprising to us was the fact that the Stealth Fries did not look like “stealth” at all but were rather thick and intense fries.

However, after an intense lunching session it was time for dessert and also here there was quite a vast selection of dishes. The offer ranged from “Crème Caramel, Cannelle, selection of berries, fruit salad, glacé lollipos, panna cotta, lemon tart with basil and strawberries, mousse au chocolat, sour cream and vanille icecream, as well as friandises”.

Obviously, it is not only about sweets when it comes to desserts – luckily so! It is also about a beautiful display of various cheeses …

… ranging from strong and rather taste-intense blue cheese to the regular hard cheeses.

Last but not least you have the chance to sit down and enjoy the coffee in the sun and relax a bit before the Sunday passes by. A few words with regards to the service. The service personnel is absolutely professional, no question. But if you are unlucky enough to get a table at the end of the garden you will have to be patient.

One last word about the restaurant – what is great from up there is the view. You are not only having a view all over Zurich but also the chance to see the lake from above while being above the city in the green. Absolutely lovely.

The event accounts for CHF 110.00 (per person, excluding wine) for junior members which is definitely not the cheapest you can have lunch for but considering the quality of the dishes and the atmosphere as well as the generosity you experience at the Restaurant Sonnenberg are absolutely worth it. Therefore, I can absolutely recommend you to enjoy a lunch or dinner at the Restaurant Sonnenberg whenever you have the chance to.
