11. September 2014: Restaurant Caminos Cafeteria

| October 26, 2014 | 0 Comments

My first impression of the Valencian cuisine was not necessarily the best. In all fairness, what I had at the Restaurant Caminos Cafeteria was absolutely okay but it was far from being the exquisite Spanish food I was used to from other Spanish cities. In order to gain a good insight I went for the “calamar a la romana con mahonesa de ajo fresco” (EUR 7.00) which was insofar good as the fried crust was aromatic and the garlic mayonnaise was actually tasty but the calamari itself were just somehow a bit chewy.

Next in line were the “croquetas de setas y roquefort” (EUR 7.50) (croquettes with mushrooms and roquefort cheese) and they were definitely already a notch better. Compared to the croquetas I was about to have over the next few days, these were falling short of the rest though.

Being only once in a while in Spain, I figured I should give the “Jamón Ibérico” (EUR 12.00) a try, and so I did. Somehow I was a bit disappointed as the quality taste-wise did not match any of my previous experiences. Also, the Jamón Ibérico looked like it had been packaged before as all the pieces had exactly the same size.

Last but not least I got something served which I actually liked quite a bit – the “Tataki de Atun Rojo con sesame Negro” (EUR 9.00) was a great combination of tuna with onions and peppers. Unfortunately, the tuna was a bit too dry but if you took it with an appropriate amount of onion and the surrounding juice it became a good dish.

The place itself looks quite nice inside but the atmosphere outside does not quite match the inside. Although it is located closed to the Plaza de la Reina (where there is a lot going on) it somehow has the atmosphere of a little (not so nice) side-street café. What must be said though is that the waitress was extermely friendly when we had placed the order shortly before closing and she did not react upset in any way when this happened. In addition to that, the prices for the dishes as well as the beverages (beer, EUR 2.40) are quite fine. Only the additional charge of EUR 0.75 for a couple of slices of bread is something I do not understand.
