12. September 2014: Restaurant La Lola

| October 31, 2014 | 0 Comments

The La Lola was recommended by a travel guide for having organic bio food so I thought why not give it a try for a change. The first impression was good as you get the “La Lola Lunch Menu” for a mere EUR 15.00. Not really knowing what to expect I was sceptical at first but I must say I was positively surprised. As a little amuse bouche from the kitchen, “home-made pate (hummus) with toast” was served. While the hummus was rather grainy in consistency it was a nice and tasty start.

The menu allowed for two starters to be picked from approximately 10 to 12 starters. I went for the “meatballs casserole with tomato sauce and potato”. While I considered the potato as chips not really fitting to the meat balls I must say the meatballs were tasty as the sauce was creamy but still rather light.

The second starter to be picked was easy, as it is called the “Surprises” – now, if a dish is called “the surprise” I a) have to have it and b) expect to be surprised. And I was! The “crispy cheese surprise with prawns, leek and red fruit and mango sauce” was great. The little balls are filled with cheese which was very aromatic but the dough around the cheese provided it additionally with a nice crispiness. What made the dish really surprising though was the combination with the mango sauce, respectively the red fruit sauce as they both were sweet and, therefore, gave the crispy-cheese-dish a nice little twist.

As a main course, the table decided to go for the “Valentian Paella” and it was a good decision as one was able to experience what is served as paella in Valencia and secondly, it was actually quite tasteful. The rice is aromatic and rich, the green beans do not seem to fit in at first sight but actually do, and the rabbit and chicken (not too much chicken though in the paella which was served) were nicely juicy.

The last course of the menu (remember, all the above for a mere EUR 15.00) was the “chef’s dessert” and I was already afraid it was going to be something rather heavy but the chef is smart serving fresh fruit to finish off the menu (figs, melon, bananas, peaches).

With regards to the atmosphere, the place is quite nice too – simple in design but somehow fitting together quite well creating an atmosphere of comfort. I assume it would be even more comfortable if it was a bit fuller as we were the only ones being inside it was a bit empty.

As you might have figured by now, the price for all this is ridiculous! I mean, come one, EUR 15.00 for all this? How do you even earn any money? In any case, good for the customers, I guess. And the same applies to the beverages, a beer accounts for EUR 2.40, a water for EUR 2.30.

Above all, the waiter and waitress who served us were friendly and had our questions answered within a few seconds and brought the food quite quickly after the order. Plus, they were somehow always up for a joke – at least the waitress.

My summary of the La Lola restaurant is simple: good food, very low prices, nice atmosphere, and good service! For EUR 15.00 there is nothing comparable (or at least I have not found anything in the 4 days I’ve spent in Valencia).
