14. September 2014: Restaurant Taberna Alkázar

| November 8, 2014 | 0 Comments

The “Ham Croquettes” (EUR 4.00) are quite okay in taste but the ones I’ve enjoyed the day before were actually better. What was a nice sidedish, so to speak were the Pommes Alumettes which were served with the ham croquettes. However, as nice the Pommes Alumettes are as an idea they are way too fried so they become too much rather quickly.

The “Black and White Pudding” (EUR 3.00) and the “sautéed garlic shrimps with green garlic” (EUR 3.00) again came on one plate being prepared rather nicely so you would become hungery. However, the quality of the preparation of the shrimp was not satisfactory. They were way too dry and did not really match my expectation of quality. The black and white pudding, on the other hand, was rather tasty (at least the black one).

The “rather large dish” (as advised by the waiter) turned out to be a “not so large” dish – the “Andalusien-style (battered and fried) assorted small fish (250gr)” (EUR 16.50) was a bit of a disappointment as the selection of fish was definitely not outstanding and from the quality of the fish – when you ate it – it was really just the leftovers being fried as you would have to toss them away otherwise.

The “Carpaccio Gambita Roja al Limon” (EUR 9.90) was actually quite delicious – as the prawns were aromatic and still juicy – and in combination with the lemon taste it was a very pleasant dish.

The “Paella Valenciana” (EUR 12.00, per person) was actually quite fine. It was comparable to the Paella I had for lunch the day before and it was also quite tasty. The rice was a tiny bit drier than the day before but overall it was a tasty paella. The dishes are overall okay but I must admit that it just somehow left the impression of a rather touristic place.

However, while you need to be a bit patient if you want to get served as apparently paying attention is not their strongest point. At least once they are at your table they are actually rather quick and bring your drinks within a couple of minutes after the order.

Overall, the place is quite okay – the prices for the dishes are not cheap for Valencia but still really fair. When it comes to other elements like water (EUR 2.05) or a double espresso (EUR 3.90) the prices are also quite okay. If you are close to the restaurant, hungry, and don’t want to look around, it is fine to eat at the Taberna Alkázar, else I would personally not go again.
