21. September 2014: Restaurant Mayer’s

| November 18, 2014 | 0 Comments

Once more I decided to use TripAdvisor as a valuable source in order to be able to identify a good restaurant in Munich I did not know yet. Well, currently, Mayer’s is ranked number four among all restaurants in Munich – but frankly speaking I do not entirely share this assessment.

So, I had booked a table in advance and the first impression was a positive one – while it looked rather simple from the outside, the place kind of brightens up when you enter. The table I got was nice, atmospheric. As a little appetizer from the kitchen, “artichoke cream with bread” was served and I must admit that the artichoke cream was actually really rich.

In order to be able to have the biggest possible experience, I decided to go for the 5 courses menu (EUR 53.50) which started with a “roasted eggplants cream soup with mint and créme fraîche”. While the soup was aromatic it was also on the verge of being way too spicy as the spiciness almost overwhelmed its original taste.

Next in line was a “crispy grilled sea bass filet on ratatouille with champagne foam”. The crispy grilled sea bass was rather regular but what was actually quite amazing was the ratatouille – it kind of tasted like I imagine the ratatouille in the movie “Ratatouille” tasted like. The champagne foam added the spark to the dish.

As the Italian touch in the kitchen was perceptible, obviously a “primo piatto” had to be served which was “Tagliolini with sautéed porcini and young spinach leaves”. The tagliolini were of good consistency and the mushrooms did the trick to enrich the whole dish flavourfully.

Next was the secondo piatto, a “saddle of lamb in a herbs and mustard crust, chanterelles tomato ragout and rosemary potatoes”. Firstly, I had specifically asked the waiter to not bring me any potatoes but more vegetables which unfortunately was forgotten. However, the saddle of lamb was tender, soft and juicy and the herb-mustard crust gave it a delicious coating.

Last in line was the “cheese variation with fig mustard”. Frankly speaking, the selection was a bit disappointing. While there were obviously different cheeses on the plate, I was only explained what I was about to eat after I had explicitely asked the waiter for this information. Secondly, there was nothing surprising on the plate but regular cheeses, good, but nothing special.

While I consider EUR 53.50 for five courses quite fair, I must admit, while everything was good taste-wise, it was definitely not mind-boggling. However, the food is generally speaking good. With regards to the service the same applies. Somehow the service is dedicated and does a good job but you can see that there is room for improvement by simple things like that I had to refill my water glass myself. Other than that, the waiters are friendly. With regards to the prices for beverages, one cannot complain (double espresso, EUR 3.50; 0,1L Grüner Veltliner, EUR 3.40; 0,1L Barbera d’Asti, EUR 3.90; 0,75L water, EUR 6.50).

Overall, I expected a bit more of the Restaurant Mayer’s due to its ranking on TripAdvisor (and my previous experience with regards to such rankings in Europe) but I have to say that all in all, the place was still nice although not a place I would drive far to dine there.
