23. September 2014: Restaurant Koi

| November 23, 2014 | 0 Comments

The Restaurant Koi was recommended to me by a friend I met in London a couple of days ago – so I figured I should definitely give it a try when I’m in Munich. I went for his recommendation and ordered the “Edamame Toryufu, truffled” (EUR 7.50). While I consider EUR 7.50 for Edamame relatively much, I must admit that the taste of the edamame with the truffle and the cream on top was actually great. What was really tricky though was to eat them with chopsticks!

As a first starter, I had “Kamo Kari Kari Salada (cumquat, mizuna)” (EUR 10.90) – the duck salad was great. The duck was not too dry but was nicely crispy and, therefore, respectively rich in taste. In addition to that, the meal was rather light and did not create the sensation of being too full after one course.

Second in line was the “Mushi Gyoza, steamed Gyoza stuffed with Black Cod and Hamachi, Sesame-Cilantro Ponzu” (EUR 14.50). The gyoza were nicely garnished and provided a wide variety of richness and various textures coming together. The stuffing of the gyoza was rich and aromatic – and the broth in which they were served in was actually great!

The “Black Angus Gyuniku, Niniku (American Black Angus beef filet, garlic chips, Yuzu-Kochu butter), 150gr” (EUR 26.50) was good. The meat was of a perfect tenderness but somehow it lacked in taste – I mean, the meat had the perfect consistency but it just lacked the flavourful experience. However, in combination with the toppings, respectively the sauce which is served with the meat, the dish is actually quite great.

Sometimes one should stop when one realizes that the experiencie is best. I went for the Japanese sweet – “moochi variation” (EUR 9.50) which is basically some type of icecream wrapped in a layer of some rice dough covered with coco flakes. I went for all of them, so “cacao, black sesame, cocos, and strawbeerry cheese cake” and I must admit that the cocos was good but the rest was a disappointment.

But in any case, the moochis look quite interesting when you open them. The place itself is quite fine as it is modern and spacious but somehow it lacks a bit of atmosphere. The waitress was very friendly and helpful and did, generally speaking, a good job. However, when I wanted to order the Moochi she had absolutely no idea and had to check back. Frankly, that is somehow okay to some degree but in such a restaurant I would actually have expected from the waitress that she knows such things.

However, the dishes are mostly great in taste – besides the moochi – and the Koi is deifnitely worth a visit. The atmosphere is generally nice, the prices are fair (also for beverages, 0,75L, EUR 6.80), the food generally good, and the service polite and trying to help.
