23. September 2014: Restaurant Seehaus im Englischen Garten

The “Cold chili tomato soup with crabs and joghurt” (EUR 9.00) was of a fresh and refreshing taste and, therefore, a good start for lunch.

As the “tegyu steak (250gr) with grilled vegetables, Seehaus herb butter and BBQ dip” (EUR 33.00) was offered as something special on the menu, kind of like a house specialty described as “tegyu fifty is an equal 50-50 breed between the Bavarian fleckvieh cattle and the legendary Japanese Wagyu beef. We serve tegy fifty beef which lives in free-range at Lake Tegern. Due to its origin there is the unusual name: Wagyu, the “Japanese cow” cross-breads with “Lake Tegern”. The meat dry ages to its optimal point in our butchery. Due to its fine fat marbleisation and the long dry aging process, it has the perfect crumbliness and the dominant, matchless taste.”

While it sounded absolutely promising I must admit: it wasn’t! The meat was tasty, no question, but it did not come close to the wagyu beef I lately had. And in all fairness, somehow it just lacked aroma – it was meat, yes, and it was definitely good but given the price (quite high for Germany) it was just somehow a disappointment. The BBQ dip and the Seehaus herb butter were good though.

As a dessert, I went for four different scoops of icecream: “Caramel au beurre salé”, “coconut”, “cherry”, and “honey-fig” (EUR 2.50 per scoop) and I must say, while they were good, they did not blow my mind either.

But I must admit the waitress was extraordinarily friendly and helpful and was mostly attentive. And the atmosphere makes quite a big junk of the experience you have at the Restaurant Seehaus – it is like a traditional Bavarian wooden shack which makes you feel like you are up in the mountains enjoying your time in a cozy atmosphere. Overall, the Restaurant Seehaus is a nice place, good service and okay food. Unfortunately, I cannot really recommend the Tegyu Beef – in my eyes a disappointment.
