22. November 2014: Restaurant Blu Mediteraneo

| January 19, 2015 | 0 Comments

The Restaurant Blu Mediteraneo was recommended to me by a friend – and it was a great recommendation. You are allowed to pick any three courses for a mere EUR 33.00, no matter how much the course usually costs. And if you are willing to pay an additional EUR 14.00, you get the matching wine pairing. The first course I had picked was “Ceviche of monkfish with bacon, mangetout and cress” (usually, EUR 13.80). The ceviche was refreshing, and the combination with the cress and the bacon provided the whole dish with a nice level of saltiness.

As a wine pairing, “Grauburgunder from the Pfalz region” was served which fit well. The second course were “ravioli with red wine shallots, filled with sautéed forest mushrooms and parmesan” (usually EUR 12.80). The ravioli were aromatic and especially the mushrooms carried a great aroma.

The wine pairing in this case was a “Spätburgunder”. The last course was somehow my favourite course – although I was at first not sure if I like it. I went for the “duo of the salmon trout and king prawns with pomegranade risotto and beans” (usually, EUR 25.80). The salmon trout was smooth and aromatic, the gambas were good too. The pomegranade risotto is very interesting as you have this experience of “exploding” pomegranade seeds – providing a light hint of sweetness to the dish while actually being in a risotto. A bit confusing at first but actually very interesting.

In this case, the pairing was a “South African Chardonnay from Stellenbosch”. The dishes are very good – and the prices, especially if you go for the menu version, are outstanding. Tremendous price performance ratio! Besides all that, I must say that the place is also pretty atmospheric as the interior decoration is quite appealing.

The prices are also quite okay for the beverages – a 0,75L water bottle accounts for EUR 5.50, a glass of “Prosecco Treviso” for EUR 5.50, and a double espresso for EUR 3.80. What makes the whole place even better though is the owner/waiter. He is friendly, jovial, and likes the teasing of his guests. But is also rewarding by providing very interesting schnapps from olive oil cans if you get along – “selling” it as an olive oil tasting which confused the whole table as this is definitely uncommon for dessert ;-).

I can absolutely recommend the Restaurant Blu Mediteraneo – great food, superb price performance ratio, passionate and funny service, and nice atmopshere!
