27. November 2014: Restaurant Fehrenbach – das kleine Restaurant

| January 21, 2015 | 0 Comments

According to TripAdvisor, the Restaurant Fehrenbach is among the best rated restaurants in Düsseldorf. And I must admit I do believe that. I went for the “Menu Lust” (EUR 67.00) which started with a “bacon plum, mashed potatoes and red cabbage soup” as an amuse bouche. These were quite strong aromas to start off but it kicked the taste buds to live (after in-flight food, the perfect wake up call). The first course of the menu was a “goose live terrine and mousse with cassis and a chocolate brioche” (usually, EUR 16.00). The goose liver was smooth, aromatic, and tasty – and nicely fatty. The cassis layer around the liver was a good sweet balancing element to the whole course. The chocolate brioche was not as dry as it looked but still a bit too dry for my personal taste.

The second course was a “black halibut with pulpo on venere risotto with mangold and mulled wine jelly” (usually, EUR 18.00). The combination of the different flavours which were present in the dish was superb – however, the pulpo was a slight bit too dry and chewy.

Next in line was the “duck breast with pumpkin ricotta ravioli, shiitake mushrooms and caramelized pumpkin seeds” (usually, EUR 18.00). The duck breast was aromatic and rich, especially in combination with the pumpkin purree.

Befor the actual main course, we were served a small surprise from the kitchen – a “sour cream ice with peach rosmary jus”. I have had sour cream ice before, and I think I probably also have had it in a peach jus – but enriched with rosemary definitely not. But I must admit that it actually gave the course a really nice twist.

The main course was a “cheek and back of a free land beef which had been cooked for 48 hours, served with king oyster mushroom, cabbage and fregola” (usually, EUR 28.00). The main course was great as the beef had a nice consistency and great flavours. The cheek disembled pratically by itself once you have had it in your mouth – in my personal opinion, that’s exactly the way it should be.

To round off the dinner, some “chocolate crocant” was served. Well, yeah, nice ggesture but definitely not coparable ot the rest of the dinner.

The place is rather small but welcoming and once you are seated you are immediately served with salt and bread – lovely little tower (you can stack the butter, pepper and salt elements) which provides with all the necessary to start.20141127-Düsseldorf-Fehrenbach-01

The prices are very fair for what you get, which also applies to the beverages. A glass (0,1L) Grauer Burgunder accounts for EUR 5.50, a glass of Dolcetto d’Albo for EUR 7.00, and a bottle thereof for EUR 44.00. Even the water (0,75l) is fair priced with EUR 6.50, as well as the double espresso with EUR 3.60. It is absolutely recommendable and necessary to book in advance as the place was full that very night.

To sum it up, the experience at the restaurant Fehrenbach is a great one as yo uget to enjoy great food, in a nice atmosphere, with good service which is not only attentive and friendly but also jovial – and last but not least the prices are absoluely fair.
