28. November 2014: Restaurant Matsuri

The difference to the place I had lunch at is tremendous! This is probably the best Japanese restaurant I have been at and I assume the closest to the real thing (although I have not yet experienced the real thing) there is. I started with “edamame” which were very simple but great.

As I had decided to take the “Sashimi Menu” (EUR 32.00) a whole army of courses was brought to the table starting off with pickled tofu. While I was very sceptical about it at first, I must say it tasted surprisingly nice. Frankly, it is nothing I would order by myself but it was good.

The next course was a “salad with wasabi dressing” which was again simple if you look at the components which had been used but the wasabi dressing gave the whole dish the extra twist – especially due to the slight spiciness the wasabi caused.

Next was a “miso soup” which was richer than usually. Often you only get this liquid called miso – with absolutely nothing in it. This version, as one can see, had spring onion rings and the like in it making it a better than usual miso soup.

Last but not least it was time for the “sashimi” – the selection of fish was great. And the aroma, the flavours – absolutely mouth-watering. The taste buds were dancing and singing of joy! Incredibly lovely fish! I had never expected this when I checked for good restaurants in Frankfurt on TripAdvisor – but hell, I was not disappointed!

For completeness reasons, the rice was served too and the way it was prepared, being slightly sticky, was great as well.

While I was a bit sceptical about the dessert – a “Japanese Green Tea Icecream (Maccha)” (usually, EUR 4.00) I was surprised again. The icecream was actually very aromatic and you really got to taste the green tea without it being too much or the like.

Personally, what I liked most about the whole place was the fish, but directly behind that was the atmosphere of the place. It was incredibly simply furnished, you get to watch the sushi master how he prepares the sushi – right in front of your eyes.

The service is friendly and helpful, but only speaks German. She was doing a great job though. The prices are absolutely nothing for the quality of fish you get. And that even applies to the beverages: a bottle of “Asahi Super Dry” (0,33L) accounts for EUR 3.80, a 0,75L mineral water bottle for EUR 5.50, and a green tea for EUR 2.50,. Overall, I can absolutely recommend the Matsuri: mega great fish! Superb atmosphere! Lovely service and super fair prices! Worth going! Worth booking in advance!
