29. November 2014: Restaurant Mera Masala

Indian food is not really my favourite food (I have not yet tried Indian in India though) – however, I must say my opinion about Indian food changed quite a bit through this experience. I started with “Phocha Hera Jhinga (marinated prawns in a light chickpea batter with ginger, garlic, cumin and coriander deep fried)” (EUR 8.50) which was not yet really mind-changing. The prawns did not seem too fresh but else, the dish was okay.

But when I had the “Hara Murg Tikkamasala (chicken filet marinated in ginger, coriander, green chillies, matured in extra virgin olive oil then cooked in hara masala sauce. medium hot)” (EUR 14.50) I must say, I was already happy when I’ve tried it the first time. When the owner, Om, walked up to the table and asked if I was satisfied and I articulated that I wanted the dish slightly hotter, he took it right away and brought it back within minutes – and it had the perfect degree of hotness. The sauce was incredible, the chicken was good, just an absolutely lovely dish!

I knew what “naan bread” was but I was not aware of the fact that there is more to naan bread than just plain naan. When I saw that there was “Keema Naan (leavebed bread stuffed with minced lamb and aromatic spices)” (EUR 3.50) I definitely had to try. And I was not disappointed. The naan bread was aromatic, rich, and so much better than regular naan.

The sauces which are served with the dishes …

… and this “cracky bread” with cumin are a good start before the actual dishes arrive. However, they are – from my point of view – not a necessity. Moreover, it is worth waiting for the actual courses as they are so good you do not want to spoil your appetite.

When you order Indian food, the table looks always pretty full – just something one has to see and experience. The place itself is simple but atmospheric. It is nothing posh or fancy but rather cozy – and to my surprise, I guess this is actually the first Indian restaurant where I – when I walked out – did not smell like Indian food. The service is friendly, and especially Om is very dedicated to making your experience a memorable one!

If you are into Indian food, it is worth visiting the Restaurant Mera Masala as the food is very tasty, the prices are fair, the atmosphere is nice (plus you don’t smell like Indian food when you leave), and the service, and especially Om, make it a great experience! Worth leaving the very centre of the city for a bit and enjoying the Indian experience.
