13. December 2014: Restaurant Kurobuta Marble Arch

I had quite high expectations and I must say they were fulfilled to a large degree. Lunch started with a “skinny bitch Cali maki with snow crab avocado omelette, yuzu mayo and zero rice” (GBP 7.00) and it was a very aromatic and tasty maki.

The next course was even more to my liking though, the “beef fillet tataki with onion ponzu and garlic crisps” (GBP 11.00) was definitely tickeling my taste buds as the onion and garlic provided the beef with the right amount of intense flavours to make it a mouth-watering dish.

The “flamed edamame with sake, lemon, butter and maldon salt” (GBP 4.00) was rather regular but fine.

When I had ordered the “tuna sashimi pizza with truffle ponzu, red onions, and green chillies” (GBP 10.00) I was a bit confused how a tuna sashimi pizza would look like but I must say it was absolutely delicious and I can highly recommend it to anyone!

The “crispy skin duck confit, watermelon, daikon pickle and spicy peanut soy” (GBP 14.00) was aromatic in its combination but the duck was a bit too dry for my personal gusto.

Something very simple but definitely something you should try when you are here, are the “sweet potato and soba-ko fries with sauces” (GBP 4.00). I guess I never really have had sweet potato fries but they were so darn tasty that we just had to order a second round of fries!

If you check in on Foursquare you unlock a drink called “Wet Pussy” (GBP 5.00) – usually I would expect that either there is a “free drink” if it is a special or at least that you’re informed that a bit of vodka, peach schnapps, and cranberry juice costs GBP 5.00. This was a bit a downer.

The place is rather simply decorated but somehow appealing as it is modern, spacious, and light-flooded. The waiter was friendly and helpful and also rather quick (to be fair we were the first customers for lunch, so we had the staffs full attention).

Overall, I can recommend the Kurobuta Marble Arch – the food is very good, the place is nice, the service was attentive. Only the prices are a bit steep but still within the acceptable (.e.g sparkling water, GBP 5.00). Booking in advance apparently not necessary for lunch – still I would recommend you to do so if you go for lunch later than midday as it started to get crowded shortly after we’ve arrived.
