22. December 2014: Restaurant Trais Portas

| February 12, 2015 | 0 Comments

This is definitely not a place you would walk by and enter – because you just wouldn’t see it. According to its own statement, the Restaurant Trais Portas is the smallest restaurant in Scuol and it is mainly a steakhouse. Therefore, booking in advance is an absolute necessity! I started with something only partially steakhouse typical, a “salad with grilled prawns and parmesan dressing” (CHF 16.50). The salad was tasty and the prawns were actually rich.

Although I am not a big fan of eating by hand, I decided to go for the “spareribs from the pork, 500gr with daily vegetables” (CHF 31.50). Honestly, wow, oh, my god! I remember when it was my sister’s 18th birthday more than 10 years ago when we’ve been to the Restaurant Zum Löwen in Gossau, Zurich. And never since I have had such good spareribs – until this day. The meat basically just falls off the bone, and the marinade is incredibly mouth-watering. Definitely the best spare ribs I have had in the last 10 years! An absolute must from my point of view!

When the dish was brought though, and the French fries were on my plate, I complained – as I had ordered the dish with polenta. Luckily, Ralf, the waiter and owner, reacted quick and within a few minutes I got my polenta which was great in taste but a tiny bit too dry. I also tried the “3P Burger” and the meat was delicious – but the buns have some room for improvement. I had a quick chat with Ralf who explained that it is difficult to also do self-made buns as the effort for a two-man show is too big – which is understandable.

The “Ojo de Agua, Puro Corte, 2012” (CHF 52.00) is a great match to the meat – but it is very smooth. Together with the bread which is served in the beginning, as well as with the fries, three sauces are served “cocktail, salsa verde, curd dip”. All of them are simple but great in their taste.

The only thing which did not blow my mind was the “brown toblerone mousse” (CHF 8.50). While it was in taste-manners definitely good, it definitely lacked a bit of fluffyness. I understand that the desserts are pre-prepared and stored in the fridge so you can pull it out quickly, however, you can taste the lack of fluffyness.

The service is really great – passionate, dedicated, and friendly. The orders are carried out within a reasonable amount of time. Really nothing to complain. What is really outstanding though, is the place itself. When you enter on the ground floor you are a bit sceptical but when you walk up the stairs you are greated by a large chest full of wine bottles.

Followed by a narrow aisle where a nice little table is decorated and you feel immediately comfortable here. The place is tiny, which makes sense being the smallest restaurant of the town, but it is very atmospheric.

From the aisle, there are two rooms – one to the left and one to the right. The one to the left is – from my point of view – definitely the more atmospheric one but also the one where it is louder as the tables are closer to each other.

The menu comes rolled up and stored in a bone. Definitely a nice surprise.

When you are in Scuol, and when you are into meat, you should definitely go to the Restaurant Trais Portas so you can enjoy a great meal in a perfect atmosphere! Booking is an absolute must, else you won’t have a table.
