9. January 2015: Restaurant Lindenhofkeller

| March 9, 2015 | 0 Comments

I was absolutely looking forward to this Chaîne event as I have heard a lot of good things about it. To sum it up beforehand: I was a bit disappointed. The “snow crab salad on avocados with rock lobster and pink grapefruit” was a really good start though. The snow crab salad was aromatic, the rock lobster mouth-watering and the pink grapefruit provided a nice sour balance. However, it was a tiny bit too sour for my taste. But at least the wine, a “Chardonnay 2013, Marco Casanova, Wein Pur, Walenstadt” (CHF 59.00), was a fit – although a very light wine, it was great in combination with the dish.

What the Lindenhofkeller really is famous for, is it’s “Prime Saddle of Veal” (see also here). This time, there was a bit another version of the “House speciality of Lindenhofkeller: Prime saddle of veal made in the stove, served with apple balsamico jus, mashed potatoes with white truffles and vegetables from the market”. The meat was absolutely tender but did not taste like much by itself. However, the apple balsamico jus did not entirely persuade me. The version with herb butter is – maybe a bit heavier but – definitely better. The wine, a “Humagne Rouge, AOC, 2012, Réserve des Administrateurs” (CHF 52.00) was nice but lacked a bit in intensity.

The last course was a “mousse au chocolate in a pyramid cake coat with mango passion fruit salad and home-made sour cream ice-cream”. I absolutely liked the sour cream ice-cream, and the salad was fine too. The mousse au chocolate was not really to my taste though.

The service was great – although the Lindenhofkeller is extremely narrow and small and you do not really have a lot of space to move, the waitresses were friendly and incredibly swift doing a great job. With a total of CHF 109.00 (menu for CHF 79.00 and CHF 30.00 for the share of the wines), the prices are very reasonable. And while it is absolutely tight to be there in a large group, the atmosphere of the old cellar vault is lovely. All in all, great place, superb service, fair prices, but the dishes did not meet my expectations.
