2. April 2015: Café @ Mariinsky II Theatre
I am not a big fan of caviar but visiting the “Le Corsaire” ballet in the Mariinsky II Theatre in St. Petersburg and watching all the Russian ladies around enjoying “Red Caviar Sandwich” (390 RUB) with “Kir Royal” (0,15L, 350 RUB) I just had to go for it …
… and I must say that it was definitely not as bad as I had expected but actually quite good. I mean, it still does not taste like much else but salt water and you have the sensation of the eggs plopping when you bite but it was still somehow fitting the event.
The “smoked salmon, cream, cheese and cucumber sandwich” (300 RUB) was as fine. The salmon was not freshly caught but had already spent some time on the toast but was still absolutely okay.
The “cheese assortment” (350 RUB) on the other hand was a bit limited in variety and taste but the honey which was served with it made it quite okay. However, I would recommend you to stick to the red caviar sandwich with kir royal.
The Café is located on the first floor of the Mariinsky II theatre and is set up quite simply but comfortably so you get to look outside and onto the incoming people. The service is kind but only parts of the waiters speak English making the whole experience a bit tricky without any knowledge of Russian. Just one hint: make sure you bring cash as they do not accept credit cards here!
