10. April 2015: Restaurant Stary Dom
My first time to Poland gave me a nice impression of Polish food – while you get butter and bread in central Europe you get “pickles, lard, and bread” in Poland. The lard is rough, intense in taste but quite nice on bread and fits well to beer (0,5L, 9 PLN; 0,3L, 7 PLN).
As a starter I went for the “tartare of seasoned beef fillet (expertly prepared and seasoned at your table by a Senior Chef) (house special)” (54 PLN) which was indeed a lovely preparation which is definitely worth watching.
The good thing is: it is not only worth watching how it is prepared but it is also very tasty. The meat quality is good, the meat is cut rather roughly but was perfectly refined with various ingredients. What was a bit surprising to me was that they did not offer toast to the dish and when we had asked for it the waiter seemed completely irritated.
The “roast wild boar served in a juniper berry sauce and sliwowica from Lacko (house special)” (59 PLN) was another house special. The boar was aromatic, the sauce was good, only the “gnocchi” (respectively, the Polish version of gnocchi) were a bit to doughy for my gusto.
Having been in St. Petersburg one week ago I realized how important it is to drink the good vodka because the “Vodka Cisowianka” (0,7L, 99 PLN) gave me a humongous headache the next morning! The service was not only attentive and jovial but also very tolerant as we were a group of 10 guys and somehow it ended up being a bit loud after the third bottle of vodka! The restaurant is very atmospheric, the dishes are good, the service tolerant and the prices are quite fair.
