20. April 2015: Restaurant Nagasui

I have just been recommended the Nagasui the previous evening and thought I must give it a try. The “chips” which were served instead of bread were definitely a good start.

There is a dish on the menu, called “Try Me – The Joy of Sharing” where you get to choose two starters and three main courses from the à la carte and enjoy your custom-made tapas menu to share which accounts for CHF 39.00 per person. So we basically went for “Dim Sum (steamed ravioli with pork and prawn stuffing on a soy ginger sauce)” (usually, CHF 14.00), “Crispy Squid (fried squid with sea salt and szechuan pepper)” (usually, CHF 17.00), Chen Pi Niu (crispy fried beef with fruity orange chili sauce with vegetables)” (usually, CHF 33.00), “Thai Khao Pad with prawns (spicy fried rice with eggs and thai basil)” (usually, CHF 25.00) and “Gai Med Mamuang (fried chicken prepared in the wok, Thai chili paste, cashew nuts, vegetables)” (usually, CHF 27.00). This means that we’d usually had ended up at CHF 58.00 per person if we’d had it by the course. However, as sweet as this sounds I am pretty sure the regular dishes are way larger but it was enough.

With regards to the quality of the food, I must admit that it was actually good. Frankly, as my friend who had recommended me the place is a foodie used to very good kitchen, I had expected a bit more but it was definitely good. The atmosphere of the place is simple – appealing but simple. The prices are very fair which is also true for the beverages (i.e. Valser, 3dl, CHF 4.50; Tsingtao, 0,33L, CHF 6.50). Only if you go for a drink, i.e. “Nagasui Driver (darm rum, light rum, white peach, maracuja juice, lemon juice, cranberry juice)” (CHF 16.00) you’ll end up paying a bit more.

Funny enough, you have to order the “fried rice” (CHF 5.00) separately as it is not included in the selection. The rice is good and fits well with what we had ordered.

The service is friendly and dedicated – but they are also a bit confused. At first we were seated to the wrong table and then politely asked to move to another table which was basically the same layout but just one row back. Secondly, I had ordered the “Nagasui Driver” but was first brought the “Nagasui Ice Tea”. This was corrected and I was brought a new drink but I asked, just to make sure, that it was not the Nagasui Ice Tea but the Nagasui Driver. I was told, oh, sorry, that’s a mistake (which made me obviously think: “Again?!”). And then I was brought the exact same drink being told it was the Nagasui Driver (which it was). With regards to keeping track, I was charged a “Nagasui Ice Tea” for CHF 8.00 and additional “wine” (which I never had) for CHF 8.00 to match the CHF 16.00 of the “Nagasui Driver”.

Overall, the experience was an okay one – food is fine, prices are okay, atmosphere is fine, service has room for improvement!
