23. April 2015: Restaurant Zenzakan – Pan Asian Supperclub

| June 26, 2015 | 0 Comments

I had been recommended the Restaurant Zenzakan the previous evening in Zurich and I must admit despite the fact that it is located right around the corner of my office in Frankfurt, I never managed to go there. It is worth a visit though. The “Robata Izakaya Kushi Yaki (mixed dishes from the Robata charcoal grill)” (EUR 16.90) was a nice start. The dish is not ideal to share as you get only one of each thing which is a bit annoying but the food is okay.

I had been recommended the “Tuna-Sashimi-Pizza (cross tuna pizza with wasabi, avocado, rocket salad and ikura caviar)” (EUR 18.90) the night before so I thought I should give it a try. And it was worth trying. It looks pretty weird to have such a pizza, and it also feels a bit weird at first as it does not have much in common with an actual pizza. However, the quality of the dish is great and also surprisingly lovely with regards to flavours.

As a main course I went for the “crunchy shredded beef with edamame-ginger-salad (shredded crispy beef with Asian salad)” (EUR 23.90) which was great as well. The beef was aromatic and the combination with the Asian flavoured salad really made it a sound dish.

With regards to the interior and atmosphere, I must say the place is very nice. The only negative aspect is the brightness as it basically completely lacks any brightness so the whole place is rather dark. Atmospheric but dark. It kind of reminded me of the Carpe Diem Lounge Club (CDLC) in Barcelona.

They take it from the living! The prices are relatively steep for Germany especially with regards to the beverages (i.e. water, 0,7L, EUR 8.90; 0,1L Pinot Grigio, EUR 12.00). The service is friendly but lacks attention – you have to be patient until someone takes your order, until someone brings the food, and finally until you are able to pay your bill.

Overall, the Zenzakan is a nice place to dine out as the food is generally good but it comes at quite a high cost for German standards and the service has room for improvement. Frankly speaking, there is similarly good food for lower prices and better service in Frankfurt!
