29. May 2015: Whiskey Tasting @ Vinothek “Zum alten Stall”

| July 29, 2015 | 0 Comments

I am no big fan of whiskeys and did not become one after this event either. However, I figured for myself there are whiskeys which I might potentially like. The event took place in the framework of the “Chaîne des Rôtisseurs”, respectively the “Ordre Mondial de Gourmet Dégustateur, OMGD” and accounted for CHF 130.00.

The first whiskey was a “Secret Still Speyside 1978 / 2011; Speyside; 33y; Gordon & MacPhail; 45%” (CHF 245.00 for a bottle) which was light and lovely. The second whiskey was a “Loch Lomond Black Label, 18y, Highlands, OA, 43%” (CHF 92.00 for a bottle) which was already a tiny bit more edgy but still fine in taste.

While the focus this evening definitely was on the whiskey, I still would like to mention the “Aberdeen angus beef with potatoes au gratin”. The meat was – although it did not look so yummy – absolutely delicious. The “potatoes au gratin” was actually one of the best I’ve ever had – it was incredibly creamy and rich.

The third whiskey that evening was a” Benromach 2005 Hermitage; Gordon & MacPhail; 2014; 45%” (CHF 88.00 for a bottle) which already started to be a bit more edgy and smokey which was obviously topped by the fourth in line, a “Highland Park 2006 / 2015; Isle of Orkney; 58%” (CHF 97.00 for a bottle). And while it had a particular taste the next one had an interesting but also not too pleasant taste of salty water – namely, the “Bunnahabhain Cèobanach; Islay; OA; 46,3%” (CHF 99.00 for a bottle). The last whiskey this evening, was a “Caol Ila 2004 / 2015; Islay, Gordon&MacPhail; 60,1%” (CHF 109.00 for a bottle) was definitely too strong for my palate.

While I am still no big fan of whiskeys, I must admit that the tasting was a great idea to get a glimpse of the world of whiskeys. If you have the chance attend an event of the “Chaîne des Rôtisseurs” or the “Ordre Mondial de Gourmet Dégustateurs, OMGD”, I can definitely recommend you to take advantage of this opportunity.
