23. October 2015: Restaurant Im Herzen Afrikas
A true experience! That is what you get at the Restaurant Im Herzen Afrikas (German for “in the heart of Africa”). I do not remember when I last ate at a restaurant where you are only able to eat by hand. There is no cutlery, even if you ask, there is still no cutlery. I started with “hummus (fresh hummus made of chick peas, sesame paste, berbere and olive oil, served with thin North African flat bread)” (EUR 5.00).
So far, no big surprise as I usually have my hummus with flat bread and dip it. The main course though, a “mixed platter with various meats” (EUR 10.00), was a surprise though. Not only the fact that there is no cutlery but also – and even more – the different flavors and tastes you can find on there. Intense but lovely!
The “Honey Wild Berry (honey wine with wild berry tonic), 0,3L” (EUR 7.00) is the perfect drink to it. Slightly sweet perfectly balancing off the intensity of the dishes.
The place is not only unique with regards to the way you eat your dishes but also the way you are seated. It feels like a (modernized) African town somewhere out in the dessert. You sit on the floor (there are some seats at tables) and it just feels very different. Therefore, the place is also always quite booked. It is highly recommended to book well in advance.
Personally, there was only one thing which was definitely not satisfying: you can only pay in cash. And they don’t tell you or you don’t find it on their homepage. Something which is definitely unpleasant. Luckily my company had enough cash for the two of us as I barely ever carry around EUR.
Overall: Great experience! If you are in Frankfurt, you should definitely go!
