1. November 2015: Restaurant Julija
It is not that easy to find a restaurant which is open on a Sunday in the city of Ljubljana – especially if you are looking for a restaurant which is kind of “high ranked”. However, after checking out various restaurants we found one which was open – Julija! The interior is appealing and the staff is friendly. The restaurant is more like a very long hallway than a room, however, once you arrive towards the end of the hallway there is actually a dining area with a couple of tables.
We went for a small starter plate with cold cuts, cheese, tomatoes, olives, and burrata. The selection was absolutely fine to start but is not comparable to what you get in Italy.
As a main course I went for the “beef fillet Julija with truffles, 200gr” (EUR 21.90). While the price is quite steep for Slovenia, the meat was actually tender but lacked a bit in taste.
However, the “Struklij” (EUR 3.50) as a side dish were not as good as the ones I had tried two nights before. The consistency was just no really triggering your taste buds as it felt like eating jellyfish, or at least how I imagine eating jellyfish tastes like. Not too good.
The waiter was attentive, friendly, and swift. Overall, there is nothing to complain about the restaurant itself but there was one thing which was incredibly unpleasant. One of the guests at a neighbor table was smelling incredibly bad – and every time he would lift his arms, it was like a swoosh of bad smell would spread across the room.
Besides this incident – obviously not the restaurant’s fault – the experience was a pleasant one. Fair food, more or less fair prices, nice atmosphere, good service. And: open on a Sunday!
