Better advertised than actually deliverd: Restaurant Aqva (26. January 2016)
The Restaurant Aqva was recommended to me by the Sheraton Iguazú Hotel I stayed at. However, this was definitely not a top-notch recommendation. I started with the “antipasti of local specialties (avocado, heart of palm, fried manioc, fish tart, typical corn pies)” (56 ARS) and while it was quite okay in terms of taste, it really kind of lacked creativity. I mean, putting cocktail sauce on palm hearts is not really fine cuisine.
I had high expectations for “beef in Argentina” and I must admit they were not entirely met. I went for the “Bife de Lomo” (240 ARS) with “Yuca Gnocchi con Cuatro Chesos sauce” (75 ARS). While the Yuca Gnocchi are usually a main course, I asked for them to be a side dish which was made possible. With regards to the meat, I must say it was incredibly tender but the way it was prepared was somehow disappointing. When meat is tender but does not taste like much really nor has any grill flavours, it is just kind of boring (despite its good quality).
The prices are very fair for Swiss standards, I must admit. Which is also true for the beverages (i.e. Agua Mineral, 0,5L, 30 ARS; Flavoured Water Pear, 35 ARS; Double Café, 28 ARS). The selection of breads was great though …
… but the “vegetable spread” was nothing more but spread without taste.
The place is simple but lovely in its simplicity although I would highly recommend you to ask for a table upstairs as it is definitely calmer and nicer than the lower floor. When it comes to the service, there were a couple of things which did not work out entirely.
Firstly, although I had booked a table via the hotel in advance, there was no reservation on the books waiting for me. Luckily, there was still a table free. Next in line was the waitress. While she was very friendly and definitely tried her best, it was still really not the best performance. When it came to serving the dishes she sometimes was not able to tell us what we ate. Secondly, there was definitely a lack of attention towards the customers as waiting for the bill took like 15 minutes (and yes, she was aware that we were about to leave as the cab driver was already waiting).
Overall, it is not a place I would recommend highly. I mean, it is not bad and all but definitely very common. The only thing which was great was the tenderness of the meat but else I wouldn’t come again.
