Great Turkish food @ Hasir Restaurant (21. May 2016)

The Hasir was recommended to me by a friend and as I haven’t had Turkish food since I last was to Istanbul two years ago (besides the quick stop-over from Baku via Istanbul two months ago), I was quite looking forward to it. And I started with a non-Turkish dish, “humus” (EUR 5.50) which was at first a bit odd with the sesame but then actually turned out to be quite fine.

The “Tzatziki” (EUR 4.50) was decent from an aroma perspective but was – for my personal gusto – way too liquid. Which makes dipping and having the feeling you actually have dip on your bread quite annoying.

I decided to try a couple of things I haven’t had yet and went for the “Sigara Böregi” (fried rolls with goat cheese) (EUR 6.00). While the rolls were interesting as a concept, they were definitely too dry for me. It went quite well with the dip but else I would definitely not have liked them as much as you do not taste much of the goat cheese.

The “Peynirli Pide (flat bread with cheese)” (EUR 7.00) turned out to be way cheesier than expected but was rich – especially when putting some chili flakes on it. But if you are not super hungry, I would recommend you to only have that as a starter. It is quite a portion!

The “Enginar Tava (fried artichoke with goat cheese)” (EUR 6.00) was good. I mean, if you just fry artichokes, it is not really that special, but if you stuff that fried artichoke with goat cheese (obviously before frying it), it becomes quite tasty as the cheese obviously remains liquid in the batter.

Given we found the Tzatziki too liquid, we decided to go for the “eggplant dish” (similar to Baba Ganoush) which was – honestly speaking – nothing special.

After actually feeling stuffed already, the main dish arrived. The “Sis Yogurtlu (lamb on the skewer with yogurt and tomatoes sauce)” (EUR 13.00) was definitely different than I had expected and the plate was way fuller too. While the right side of the plate was actually fine, the right side of the plate tasted as if they was any fuel spilled on the meat. Not really to my liking. Which was a pity as the dish itself was actually good.

I tried a bit of the “Künefe” (EUR 4.00) for dessert one of our party had ordered – actually just one bite as I was curious on how a “cheese-based” dish would taste like for dessert. And while it is not really sweet, it was somehow surprisingly good and interesting as a dessert.

The atmosphere of the place is very simple but given you are there with the right group, it is fine. Especially if you get to sit outside, the place is perfect to watch people passing by – and there is quite something going on there as it is almost a pedestrian area. The service is friendly, attentive, and even speaks English (something I had not expected). And the prices are super low for what you get (including the amount) which is also true for the beverages (i.e. Turkish tea, EUR 2.00; 0,75L San Pellegrino, EUR 5.00; 0,5L water, EUR 2.00). If you want to have dinner there during peak hours, I would definitely recommend you to book a table in advance.
