Absolutely great food with a view on Hamburg: Restaurant CLOUDS (18. June 2016)

You know when everything is going good, then things turn bad and your mood is ruined, you are pissed – and then they somehow manage to get things right again and your mood is back to great? Well, this was the case at the CLOUDS. We were seated at a lovely table, the waitress, Isabelle, was friendly, professional, jovial. Great job really.

It took us a while to decide what we wanted to eat and at the time we were ready to order the table next to us (approx. 15 people) got their dishes. And apparently they have a very competent waiter, Isabelle, and many, many incompetent waiters! Basically she had to orchestrate everything but the colleagues did not manage to do what she said – so it got messy, and took ages. So, basically after watching the spectacle like 10 – 15 minutes, we obviously got annoyed.

Finally, the order was taken and my face said all. And only like 5 minutes later the starters were at our table! Surprise! I mean, wow, amazing! And that is really how she managed to get us back in a good mood! That is what I call attentive and caring service! Chapeau!

I had a “beef tatar – prepared at the table – with beet root, green sauce, and mustard mayonnaise” (EUR 15.50). You get to try a tiny bit before the whole tatar is served. It was spot on but quite spicy – I like it that way. I thought it was a bit “ballsy” of the waitress to give the first try that spice – what if I would not have liked it? You can’t unspice it …

However, the meat was good, the tatar – supposed to be served with “Sardian bread” (the waitress did not put it on the table but took it with her with her little wagon; not Isabelle) – was rich and the combination with the beet root or the green sauce was interesting as it kind of balanced the spiciness of the dish.

If you are into meat and a group of people, you should definitely try the “Chateaubriand, 800gr” (EUR 115.00) for two reasons. First, the piece of meat is of the middle part of the fillet (which is quite unusual) and respectively tender. Secondly, you get to pick 6 (!) side dishes and 3 sauces which would usually account for at least EUR 45.00 themselves. So, you actually get quite a bargain if you go with the Chateaubriand.

As they have basically six different sides on the menu and a “daily special”, I decided to have basically all of them (but skipped the salad), namely, “Amazing Fries (truffle, parmesan)” (usually EUR 8.50), “leaf spinach with pine nuts” (usually EUR 5.00), “carrots in vanilla” (usually EUR 5.00), “asparagus” (usually EUR 6.50 – daily special), “potatoes with rosemary” (usually EUR 5.00), and “shallots with garlic” (usually EUR 5.00). The amazing fries were tasty and so was the leaf spinach with pine nuts but I really loved the “carrots in vanilla”. The combination was absolutely amazing without being too sweet. Definitely recommended!

The “Sauce Béarnaise” (usually EUR 3.00) was mouth-watering, the “pepper cream sauce” (usually EUR 3.50) was a bit of a disappointment though. It did not really fit and it did not really taste that great.

What was lovely though was the “caramel fleur de sel icecream” (EUR 3.50 per scoop) – I could have dug in quite a bit more!

Overall, I loved the experience at the Restaurant CLOUDS: You get great meat for a very amazing price especially for the Chateaubriand (also true for the beverages, i.e. 0,75L San Pellegrino, EUR 8.00; Brunello di Montepulciano, EUR 69.00; Grappa Big Mamma Sarpa di Poli, 2cl, EUR 9.50; and double espresso EUR 4.50), the view over Hamburg is perfect, the atmosphere is lovely, and I must say that I have actually never experienced that a waiter or waitress manages to turn my mood around if it was ruined before by insufficient / bad service! Chapeau, really! Great job, Isabelle! Go on like that!

What was funny though in the end was the fact that they had another selection of Grappas on the dessert menu than in the “overall menu”. As I was already paying attention to the Grappas when placing the original order, I inquired if I was allowed to have the original menu again upon having received the dessert menu. After inquiring why there are different grappas on the menu, I was informed that they had updated their grappa selection but apparently had not yet adjusted the menu.
