Outstanding dishes where you wouldn’t expect them: Restaurant Al Pont de Ferr (10. September 2016)

While I was a student in Milan some years ago, I was definitely not aware that the Navigli had fancy restaurants – well, despite the fact that it does not really look much fancy from the outside, the dishes were actually great. After having placed the order, they served a small amuse bouche as a greeting from the kitchen – “macaroon with foie gras and gyoza with pork” as a starter. While it was a small start, it was fulminant in terms of taste.

The selection of breads which was served right after the amuse bouche was actually outstanding – you would find something for quite everybody. Only, some of the slices seemed to be more than a day old as they were quite crunchy.

It sounded so promising and it looked so amazing – and it fulfilled all the promises after having a first bite. “The candied version of red onion, filled with fresh goat cheese, caramelized onion, and sesame bread” (EUR 18.00) was outstanding. The glazed outside was sweet and slightly crunchy, the interior flavorful.

At first, I thought they serve pheasant tartare as I misread “Fassona” – but the “Fassona tartare from Piemonte by “Macelleria Brarda” with mustard ice cream” (EUR 20.00) was actually a regular beef tartere. Admittedly, the beef was good and you did not really need any bread with it. The mustard ice cream really tickled your taste buds – something quite unique, I must admit.

While you get to enjoy the vivid atmosphere of the Navigli, the Al Pont de Ferr is actually quite an exceptional restaurant for the area. Usually, it is more “ground to earth” in terms of food. However, when it comes to the service, there is definitely room for improvement as the waiters were friendly but not really that attentive. Overall, I can absolutely recommend you to dine at the Al Pont de Ferr – great food, nice place, fair prices, and not so attentive service.
