Nice breakfast selection: Restaurant The Saffron @ The Westin Hamburg (5. November 2016)

| December 3, 2016 | 0 Comments

The Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg has become a sign for bad architectural planning and budgeting. But finally, after I don’t know how many years, the Elbphilarmonie opened. And with it, The Westin Hamburg opened too. I had the pleasure to spend the opening nights there and definitely loved the hotel.

On Saturday, it was time to have the first ever breakfast in that hotel (at least first ever open to the public) and I must say the breakfast selection was quite good ranging from various breads …

… to juices, fresh fruit, and vegetables …

… various cold cuts and local German treasures like “met” …

… and a selection of warm dishes including the omelet station. The first day, the bacon was served in little cubes which was not really that outstanding as it was way too salty. The second day though, they had changed to regular bacon stripes which was definitely more to my liking. The omelet is prepared swiftly and tastes good (going for my usual ham and cheese omelet).

Overall, the selection of dishes is good but there could be a bit more to it. At least for my personal gusto – comparing it for example to the breakfast in The Westin Grand Munich or Bristol, A Luxury Collection, Vienna, there is some room for improvement.

The service is friendly and caring and you can really see how they try to do everything absolutely perfectly and not to do a mistake. However, there is some room for improvement in coordinating who does which tables and has done what. I appreciate it if I am asked if I want orange juice at the table but not so much if the same thing happens twice within two minutes by two different waiters.

The atmosphere of the restaurant is generally nice – however, the layout which is one big L is not really to the advantage to the people showing up a bit later for breakfast not scoring a table close to the buffet as you have to walk quite a bit before you are back at your table if you are at the further end.

Overall, The Saffron at The Westin Hamburg is a lovely restaurant (which was also fully booked both nights I spent there) and offers decent breakfast with caring service. However, there is some room for improvement and personally I am not much of a fan of the layout (given you have to walk all the way to the buffet – I imagine for attended service it is a bit different).
