When the service is not up to the task: Restaurant Heimat Küche + Bar (5. November 2016)

| December 6, 2016 | 0 Comments

As there was so much going on that weekend in Hamburg, it was almost impossible to score a table at any of the top restaurants in the city. After calling approximately 15 restaurants, I finally gave up and started wandering around HafenCity. And we ended up at the Heimat Küche + Bar in the 25hours hotel.

To start some “Aioli with country bread from Sylt” (EUR 4.50) was just about right. The aioli was rather smooth and did not have an intense taste of garlic. And luckily it was served rather quickly.

I also went for “coloured beet roots with pear, goat cheese, and walnuts” (EUR 14.00) as a starter – the combination was good. However, it wasn’t really all that colourful (i.e. only red and yellow beets) and the portion was humongous!

As you would expect, the main course was only posted to the kitchen to be prepared once you’re done with the starter. Well, the small problem there was that I was done with my starter and it still took the waiter 15 minutes until he finally took away the empty plate which then obviously caused another 15 minutes waiting time until the main course arrived. I went for “green cabbage, cabbage sausage, pork belly and roasted potatoes” (EUR 22.00). The sausage was lovely and had an intense flavour which was completely balanced off by the potatoes which did not taste like anything at all! For my personal gusto, the cabbage was over-seasoned.

The atmosphere of the place is simple but attention to detail has been paid (e.g. “happiness is in your stomach” napkin) and the selection of wines is quite okay too (e.g. “Le Volte Rosso, 2014, Tenuta dell’Ornellaia, Tuscany, Italy”, EUR 55.00).

However, the chairs are not really that comfortable and the waiter is funny but definitely not as attentive as he should have been. Overall, the restaurant is good average – the starter was fine but the main wasn’t special at all. At least the price for the beverages are completely fine, i.e. “Magnus Mineralbrunnen, 0,75l” (EUR 6.90) and “Double Espresso” (EUR 3.50).
