Impressive Flamenco show with decent food: Restaurant Corral de la Morería (9. December 2016)

| January 15, 2017 | 0 Comments

The ‘Corral de la Morería’ is famous for the flamenco show it puts up – and apparently a lot of people including celebrities have visited so it is absolutely crowded and very advisable to book a table in advance! If you only watch the show, it’s EUR 38.90 plus 21% VAT, so EUR 47.07 which is still worth paying but it is just not really a nice way of putting it in the ‘menu’ without making it clear what the actual price is.

If you combine it with dinner, you can pick from different menus or from the à la carte, what you want to eat. We went for the “Soleá Menu” (EUR 49.90 excl. VAT, respectively EUR 60.38 incl. VAT). While the price is a bit steep, you have to consider that you also get water and wine (1 bottle for two), so it equals a bit.

I went for the”Poultry Egg Yolk at 63° over Ropa Vieja (shredded beef), carrot cream and Madrid stew broth (“the soul of the “Cocido Madrileño” (Traditional Madrid Stew) is contained in its essence and flavours”)). It looked incredibly promising (also, I was quite hungry) and had a couple of bites when the waiter showed up and said that he’d have to take the dish again without any explanation why. I was a bit surprised as it had looked and tasted good but I only had two small bites.

After the waiting time was over – and it took quite a bit until it was served again. There was the same dish coming again. Well, at least I couldn’t optically spot a difference. And given I have only had two tiny spoons of the first version, I also didn’t realize any taste difference after 15 minutes of waiting. However, the only explanation I could come up with was that they had served the wrong broth the first time. Anyway, once the dish was there, it was actually very tasty. Smooth, creamy, rich.

As a second course, I went for the “braised veal pie, sautéed boletus and mashed potatoes “(the finest beef cooked “sous-vide” for 72 hours, so tender you could eat with a spoon”)”. And yes, the meat was actually separable with a spoon. It was incredibly smooth, dissembled perfectly, and was rich in its aroma although quite strong in taste.

The final meal of the evening was the”Five Textures of Chocolate” which were basically crumbles, a dark chocolate cream, a very moist chocolate cake, a leaf of chocolate, and all served in white chocolate sauce. It was heavy, yes, but it was actually very pleasant in taste! However, as it was served during the performance, it was all a bit rushed. So I’d recommend future visitors to come earlier, finish dinner, and then enjoy the show.

Luckily, the bottle of “Selección Corral de la Morería, D.O.Ca. Rioja” lasted perfectly for the whole show.

And for everyone who has never seen a flamenco show, it is an absolute must! I mean, the guitar players are already impressive, the singers are breath-taking when you realize what voice they manage to get out of their bodies …

… but what is truly outstanding is the passion and intensity of the flamenco! Absolutely loved the show!

When you go, just make sure to go early so you can finalize your dinner in time before the show plus book in advance as the place is completely crowded!
