Cod fish and chips – rather special: The Alchemist Gastropub (28. January 2017)
The restaurant is ranked quite good on TripAdvisor, so I was expecting quite something but I was, frankly speaking, slightly disappointed by the food selection. I went for the “posh fish & chips (crispy battered North Atlantic fresh cod fillet, fries, tartar sauce, mushy peas)” (36 PLN). The fish itself was fine as the dish was good but it wasn’t really many fish and chips but just one huge ass fish – and the cod as a fried fish was a bit special. The fries were generously served, the taste was absolutely good, however, the mushy peas lacked all seasoning.
The “Rosemary Mojito (home-made rosemary infusion simple syrup muddled with Bacardi Bianco, limes, fresh mint – long drink)” (24 PLN) on the other hand was actually delicious. While I was seated at a nice table where I would be able to have a look directly into the kitchen, it was a bit annoying that the table was basically in everyone’s way. So I would have to move over and over again to make space for people passing. Well, not entirely pleasurable but something you can definitely deal with.
The service is, in my humble opinion, also not entirely up to the task. It takes them too long to take up the order, to serve it, and to follow up. But at least they were friendly and did a good job in terms of kindness. The prices are absolutely fine which is also true for the beverages (i.e. “San Pellegrino, 0,75L, 18 PLN” or “Espresso Doppio, 9 PLN”). Overall, The Alchemist is a nice place with a lovely interior, decent food but nothing outstanding and fair prices. With regards to the service, there is definitely room for improvement. Despite all that, make sure you book a table in advance as you might ending up leaving as it is pretty packed.
