Amazing meat in a place you’d not expect it: Restauracja Hoża (28. January 2017)

When I thought of Poland, I was not necessarily associating it with great meat – but it turns out, there is actually great meat. I went for the “chopped sirloin tatar, with semi-pickled cucumber, shallot and chanterelle and mustard dressing” (37 PLN) as a starter. And I was super positively surprised. The plate did not only look marvelous and that someone paid incredibly much attention to detail, the meat was actually also luscious.

The bread which was served with it on the other hand was rather standard, i.e. it wasn’t even toasted which is a bit unusual for tatar.

As a main course, I went for the “Argentinian fillet, 240gr” (120 PLN) with “Chipotle Sauce” (usually 8 PLN), “French Fries” (usually 10 PLN), and “fried kale with pine nuts” (usually 10 PLN). Now, getting 240 gr of beef filet for 84 PLN is really a bargain. And, on top of that – the meat was actually prepared perfectly medium rare as I had requested and it had a nice meat taste. The grill aromas could have been a tiny bit strong to match my personal gusto – but besides that, absolutely nothing to complain!

The atmosphere of the restaurant is generally nice but quite simple. When you are in the room in the back, the atmosphere is definitely better as you are not right next to the entrance which happens if you are in the main room. However, it is still lovely and they really manage to create a pleasant surrounding. The waiter is incredibly swift, attentive, and friendly. Thumbs up for that! The prices are also rather decent for the beverages (i.e. a glass (150ml) of ‘Prosecco Extra Dry’ accounts for 16 PLN, 0,7l of ‘San Pellegrino’ for 18 PLN, and a bottle of ‘Pinot Grigio, Mezzacorona Riserva, Trentino, DOC’ for 95 PLN).

All in all, I can definitely recommend you to enjoy a good piece of meat at the Hoża. Just make sure to book a table in advance and definitely try the tatar!
