Surprisingly great Italian pizza with a thick crust: Restaurant Mamma Assunta (22. February 2017)
From the outside, the Mamma Assunta looks like a run-down place where nobody ever walks in – but you should! The place is definitely simple but besides being simple, it is also absolutely crowded for lunch – we were lucky to get the last free table. Everything else was booked in advance! Quite impressive for a Wednesday – at least to me it is.
We were welcomed friendly and kindly, and get to place your order within no time. I started with a “Insalata Caprese” (CHF 11.50) which was decent – and I especially liked the tomato cut into tiny pieces in the middle of the plate. Something a bit out of the ordinary.
As a main, I went for the “Pizza Calabrese (tomatoes, mozzarella, capers, bell pepper, salami)” (CHF 18.50) with “additional anchovies” (CHF 1.50). The pizza was great, the topping generous, but the dough was – for my personal gusto – a bit too thick and doughy. I would have preferred to get a bit a thinner crust but the pizza was otherwise close to perfect.
Overall, the Mamma Assunta can definitely be visited for a good hearty Italian lunch – decent place, decent service, decent food, fair prices (also true for beverages, i.e. 0,5l San Pellegrino, CHF 6.00; double espresso, CHF 7.00). Just make sure to book a table in advance.
