Decent Mexican food but not the real deal: Restaurant Grill & Vine @ The Westin Guadalajara (7. April 2017)

Finally back in Mexico, I was looking forward to enjoying some real Mexican food – and well, probably, a SPG property is not the best place for that when I’m thinking about ‘authentic’ dishes but nevertheless, or rather, because the room wasn’t ready yet, I decided to have lunch here and went for the “Marlin Tacos (2pcs) (coleslaw, chipotle dressing & lime)” (110 MXN) and the “Shrimp Mini Tortas (2pcs) (creamy tomato and pickles sauce)” (125 MXN) as a starter. The Marlin Tacos were rich in combination with the various little ingredients to add and the Shrimp Mini Tortas were – well, let’s say at first – unusual to eat. You are supposed to bath the dish in some soup (which is something I wasn’t aware of) but in the end it was quite delicious.

As a main course, I went for something ‘not so Mexican’, a “Beef Tenderloin (220gr) with black pepper sauce” (360 MXN) and had “Mashed Sweet Potatoes” (39 MXN) as a side. The beef was tender indeed but it was a bit overcooked for my personal gusto and it lacked a bit of intensity in taste. The mashed sweet potatoes were seasoned with cinnamon which made it really sweet – not unpleasant, but quite sweet. However, the portion received remembered me more of a meal for an entire family than of a side dish as it was really quite generous.

The place itself is quite nice as it is spacious, you have enough room between the single tables to keep it ‘private’ and the service is not only caring but also very friendly.

The prices are obviously more like in a Western place than really down town Mexico but still quite decent and if you tell them that you’re a SPG member you get an additional 10% off. Overall, I can recommend you to have lunch at the Restaurant Grill & Vine in The Westin Guadalajara as the food is good, the prices are decent, the service is very good and the atmosphere is nice too.
