Very spacious wine restaurant with decent food: Restaurant 1733 (2. May 2017)

When I walked by the 1733 the first time, I was immediately intrigued by the fact that there was a wine restaurant in St. Gallen I didn’t know so it was finally time after three months to give it a try. I booked a table in advance but frankly, that isn’t necessary as the restaurant was pretty empty. However, once you’ve entered through the side where the wine store is and passed it, you end up in a rather spacious restaurant area. When you’re seated you are served some “bread with wild garlic salt and olive oil” – and the salt is quite intense with the flavour of wild garlic but pleasant.

As a starter, I went for the “tapas plate ‘1733’ to share” (CHF 28.00) which comes with a tomato soup, risotto, tartare, bread, cheese, cold cuts, olives, parsnip and a variety of other small dishes. The portion is actually quite large for two people but it is overall tasty. Only, the flavours are sometimes quite strong and overwhelming so you have to find the right balance / order to try the various small things.

As a main course, I went for the “beef tartare served with toasted home-made bread, butter and a salad bouquet” (CHF 28.00). Firstly, you can’t really call that a bouquet as it was more or less one salad leave with a bit of sauce. Secondly, the tartare was good in taste but not ‘medium’ in terms of degrees of spiciness as ordered but rather not spicy. But, it was – overall – a decent dish.

The service was friendly and very attentive – always there to top up the wine, a “Ripasso, Degani, Veneto, 2014” (CHF 52.00), or the water (“sparkling water”, 0,7l, (CHF 5.80)) and the “double espresso” (CHF 4.90) was served in no time. So, if you are into a place which serves decent wines, has a good selection of dishes in a spacious atmosphere, I can recommend you to try the 1733.
