When the online reservation system doesn’t work: Restaurant Brasserie Schiller (8. May 2017)

I had booked a table online – but unfortunately, that didn’t work. So when I walked in asking for my table, there wasn’t any. Not really the way you want your lunch to start. However, a table was found soon and I went for the ‘lunch menu’ (CHF 37.00) which started with a “prawn cocktail”. Frankly, I have been expecting something completely different! But, I do admit that said ‘cocktail’ was actually surprisingly good. The prawns were well cooked and the avocado bed on which they were served was a great fit.

As a main course, I went for the “grilled monkfish served in a mustard sauce and with sweet potato puree”. While the combination of the various flavours (fish, mustard sauce, and sweet potato) was absolutely rich, I must say that the fish itself was not entirely to my liking. It was very chewy and stringy – not how you would want your fish to be.

For dessert, I went for the “red berries with vanilla ice cream” which was a nice ending to a decent lunch. With regards to the atmosphere I can only say that it is a very pleasant place – but obviously it is better if you book a table in advance (by calling) so you will be sure not to share a table with two other people you don’t know.

Service-wise, respectively especially speed-wise, I was not entirely satisfied. They were definitely friendly, no question, but they were very slow – so not really an ideal place for a quick lunch. While the price for the lunch menu is actually outstanding (especially for a three-course-menu), the prices for the beverages are on the hefty side (i.e. 0,75l San Pellegrino, CHF 9.50; double espresso, CHF 7.00). So, overall, I am not so sure anymore what to think: good bargain, fair dishes, nice atmosphere, slow, expensive beverages, and no reservation there.
