Simply delicious – deliciously simple: Restaurant Os Bons Malandros (12. May 2017)

| July 28, 2017 | 0 Comments

Usually, the kitchen closes around 11pm – however, given we only arrived 11:05pm because my TAP flight was – once more – delayed, the generously re-opened the kitchen and prepared a couple of dishes just for us. Something I would have, frankly speaking, not expected. To start some bread with spreads was served.

As the order had been placed before I arrived, I can’t exactly say what we were having but it was some kind of ‘sandwich’, rice, and some curry-like dish. And while it was simple, it was hearty, tasty food – putting you in a state of comfort.

The favourite dish of the evening was definitely the “tuna with avocado and a mojito sphere”. Weird? Yeah, kind of! But it was actually outstanding. You first ate a bit of the tuna and the avocado so your palate would be coated with that flavour mix – and then you’d take the mojito sphere which would explode in your mouth – like an actual taste explosion! Rather amazing really!

The goat cheese in pastry with raspberry sauce was a regular good dish but …

… the crayfish were definitely outstandingly rich. However, the actually edible part is rather small as the majority of the ‘dish’ consists of shell. Overall, the food we received from the ‘already closed’ kitchen was great. I get why the Os Bons Malandros is among the best rated restaurants in Lisbon on TripAdvisor. After all, for all that and a couple of drinks and wine, we ended up paying something like 100 EUR. Really quite a bargain, I’d say!

The place is tiny – so it is better that you book a table in advance. And, recommended, also show up. They weren’t – obviously – really happy that we were like an hour late for our reservation. The atmosphere is nice as it is rather lively and crowded – even late at night before they close down. With regards to the service, I must admit that the quality varies a bit depending who is attending you. Some are very attentive and friendly and the others are just friendly.
