Offering way more than focaccia only – with a lovely garden in the back: Restaurant focacceria (22. May 2017)

So far I have associated the focacceria with antipasti and focaccia and not with proper dishes but as I have been recommended to pay the place a visit when in St. Gallen, it was time to try it out. There is a nice little patio with a garden where you can sit outside and enjoy the first days of summer. As a starter I went for the “Insalata Caprese with peeled tomatoes and marinated burata” (CHF 15.50). The burata was delicious and went very well with the tomato and rocket salad.

As a main course, I’ve had a “beef tartare, from the butchery of Ueli Zeller from Herisau, served with a sashimi marinade on a wasabi green tea mirror with rocket salad and apples” (CHF 32.00). I have had many beef tartares in the past 8 years (and even before) but I must say, I particularly liked this one. The meat wasn’t that surprising but the sashimi marinade and the wasabi green tea mirror on which it was served were just perfect. And frankly, it is also the first time I’ve been enjoying tartare with focaccia.

The “yuzu mint sorbet” (CHF 4.50) sounded lovely but to be entirely honest, it was a bit of a disappointment. It was too frozen so you would have rather huge chunks of ice in the dessert itself and you wouldn’t taste too much of either the yuzu or the mint.

Overall, I was very positively surprised about the quality of the dishes though and the dishes were very fair in price. With regards to the beverages, the same applies although the gap to Zurich is not as large as with the dishes. A bottle of mineral water (1L) accounts for CHF 9.50, a double espresso for CHF 5.80 and a bottle of “Bugiardo Buglioni, Ripasso, 2014” for CHF 61.00.

Besides the lovely atmosphere in the garden and the good dishes for reasonable prices, Nania, the waitress who attended us this evening, made it an absolutely lovely evening. She was very friendly and caring and there at all times – just as you wish good service to be. I can absolutely recommend you to dine at the focacceria – just make sure you book a table in advance!
