Amazing view and a surprising dessert: Restaurant M on the Bund (26. May 2017)

Besides a short weekend trip to Hong Kong two years back, I have never had the pleasure to be in China. And I must admit despite a rather long flight, I did enjoy this one night in Shanghai on the Bund. I got recommended the ‘M on the Bund’ by a variety of people, so I decided to give it a try and it turned out to be a good choice. Once you’ve arrived to the Bund and make it up in the early evening – and you’re lucky enough to have good weather – the view you have from the balcony is quite lovely and you can even see the sun go down.

It turned out to be a bit cool outside but there are nice covers making sure you won’t be cold. Once you’re seated you’re attended quite immediately, however, the service is not entirely coordinated as quite some waiters came and asked us various times if we wanted water. As a little amuse bouche, ‘quail egg canape with lemon and paprika’ is served which was a lovely teaser to the palate.

As a started I went for something healthy after being up in the air for 11 hours and had the “roasted eggplants, grilled zucchini and roasted red peppers topped with a tower of rocket, almonds and basil” (98 RMB). Honestly, I did not expect too much but it tasted actually great! Refreshing yet healthy.

As a main course, I went for the “hot house-smoked salmon, celeriac purée, sautéed spinach, a poached happy egg and a sprinkling of Baltic salmon eggs” (278 RMB). While the salmon was definitely good, I must say that CHF 40.00 for that tiny piece of fish without any side dish seems quite a rip-off. Despite the location, despite the quality of the food.

What was super interesting though was the dessert – I went for “chocolate & salted caramel mousse with peanut butter crunch” (106 RMB) which sounded already good but what it didn’t say on the menu was that the chocolate mousse had lavender in it! While I was not immediately able to spot what it was, it was definitely a great surprise!

The bread and the butter which are served in the beginning do their job – however, the bread seemed to be a bit stale.

They do pay a lot of attention to detail – everything is properly branded with “M on the Bund”. The menu. The plates. You can definitely ‘feel the theme’.

The real reason you should come here though is the view – it is absolutely gorgeous! Especially when you are able to follow the spectacle throughout the night!

While the service was definitely friendly, they were not really coordinated respectively also forgot to bring my “Shanghai Mule (vodka, fresh lime, bitters and ginger ale)” (88 RMB) and only ‘remembered’ once I had inquired where it was.

However, the M on the Bund is worth going. The place is nice, the view is absolutely great, the service works (varies in quality though) and the food is decent. However, the place is more on the expensive side – plus charges a 10% service charge (132 RMB) on top of your consumption. But, you should go – if only to just have a drink there and to enjoy the view!
