Overrated and pseudo exclusive bar: Woobar @ W Taipei (1. June 2017)
I am a huge fan of SPG properties and usually also of W hotels but here we’re facing the ‘pseudo exclusivity’ card again. We went up to the Woobar in the W Taipei without booking anything in advance as it was a rather spontaneous decision. Once you arrive at the top where the bar is located, you’re asked if you have a booking which we denied. So the only option we were offered is to sit at the bar. I mean, I get it, okay, we haven’t made a booking but the place wasn’t exactly bursting so I think it would have been fair to offer another place – especially, considering one is a loyal guest with 650+ nights in SPG properties in the past 6 years.
However, we went to the bar which is just somewhat uncomfortable as people have to pass behind you which is rather annoying. At least the “Taipei Mule (Osmanthus flower infused Taiwanese Sorghum liquor, fresh lemon juice, W made osmanthus flower syrup, W made ginger beer)” (500 NTD) was quite delicious and while it was interesting to watch the bar tenders preparing a huge variety of different drinks, it was also somewhat uncomfortable there so we decided to call it a day and rest soon.
The bar menu is made quite lovely and functional in a typical W manner …
… as well as the serving of nuts which is practical especially given you don’t have to touch the nuts before enjoying them.
So, overall, the Woobar at the W is nice but it is definitely overrated in my personal opinion. They are playing the game of ‘exclusivity’ but somehow it doesn’t really work – especially not if the place is half empty. Still worth a visit for the view from the terrace onto the city!
