Lovely surprises on the menu – with varying service quality: Restaurant Brasserie Freilager (12. June 2017)
The good thing about the Restaurant Brasserie Freilager is the fact that they keep putting new dishes on the menu – given I come here quite often. Today I started with a “prosecco foam soup with caramelized nectarine” (CHF 15.00). While the prosecco foam soup really isn’t anything new I liked the nectarine taste – although really subtle.
What was truly refreshing was the seasonal menu – the “watermelon feta tatar with honey, thyme and lime served with toasted potato bread” (CHF 24.00) – at first I thought the portion was a joke in terms of size but actually it was enough – and more importantly, it was delicious!
The restaurant itself is still nice and the service still varies and highly depends on who serves you. Today it was decent but Julia really just does a better job than the rest. The wine I’ve enjoyed was the “Chocolate Block, 2014, Boekenhoutskloof, Stellenbosch (Syrah, CS, Grenache, Cinsault, Viognier)” (CHF 68.00) and as it was something I wanted to try already for quite a while, I was – instead of disappointed which I often am when I have high expectations – quite satisfied with the wine.
In terms of prices, the Restaurant Brasserie Freilager is, for me, still a good example of how you can run a place which serves good food and not overcharge in terms of prices. A liter of water accounts for a mere CHF 6.00 and a double espresso for a fair CHF 5.00 – something you won’t find in many restaurants in Zurich (or at least not in those I usually attend). The Restaurant Brasserie Freilager remains a place which offers good dishes for fair prices in a nice atmosphere – with varying service quality.
